Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle En Passant (2000): Fragrance Review

With so much attention on fashion these day it's very amusing that one is judged by how effortless the bar is cleared. It's no longer acceptable to be decked out head-to-toe in just one prestigious label: it's has to be a mix of different brands, all carefully arranged as if you just happened to carelessly threw them on at the last minute! Well, I can think of one scent that will complement such keen fashion sense: En Passant by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.

Olivia Giocobetti's creation is essentially white lilacs captured in a single moment: a whiff of cucumber, a touch of wheat, dabbing with an aquatic element...all blended together in an impressionistic fashion, as if one has just returned from a care-free English high tea in an idyllic garden, smelling quite nice by pure chance. Upon closer inspections, however, things are not that simple: the linear lilac fragrance is carefully arranged so the notoriously lush flower never dominates. In this case all other elements act as modifiers, keeping the flower interestingly dewy--and not a step beyond.

A word of caution, however: if effortless chic is what you are after...do not over-do a wink by drenching yourself with the scent. One spray (two at most) is often enough: refresh only if necessary. There is nothing more unappealing than showing off the embossed logo of a Birkin bag when the bag is designed to not show off the logo.
